INTERVALS

3 dimensional numbers

The significance of the fifth interval in music invites us to explore its role in the overall musical experience. Let's also examine the roles played at the third, fourth, and seventh intervals. The progression of music in fifths is closely linked to an experience beyond the individual self, allowing them to feel transported beyond their immediate existence. This becomes more evident when we explore the scales across seven octaves, covering the entire range from the lowest to the highest tones. Interestingly, the fifth interval appears twelve times within these scales, revealing an underlying twelve-part scale with the fifth interval.

What does this signify within the broader musical experience? It implies that while encountering the fifth interval, individuals, with their innermost "I," venture beyond their physical confines. They traverse the seven scales in twelve steps, metaphorically embarking on a journey beyond their physical being.

The third interval, whether major or minor, is associated with an inward motion of the human being. This interval is experienced internally, as the "I" is contained within the boundaries of the human organism. Moving from the third to the fifth interval, we observe a transition from an inner to an outer experience while recognizing the intermediate stages not explicitly discussed here. The experience of the third interval facilitates the integration of the inner self, leading to heightened self-awareness. In contrast, the experience of the fifth interval triggers an awareness of humanity's position within the cosmic order, signifying an expansion into the universe. Acting as a bridge between the two, the experience of the fourth interval is significant.

The experience of the fourth interval is genuinely captivating for those seeking to explore the mysteries of the musical dominion. It emerges at the threshold between the outer world's fifth interval experience and the inner being's third interval experience, offering a unique perspective that allows individuals to perceive the spiritual realm while simultaneously observing themselves from an external vantage point. This analogy draws parallels between visual and auditory experiences to describe the profound nature of the fourth interval. Unbeknownst to the individual, the sensation they experience with the fourth interval is rooted in the feeling that they exist among the divine entities. While they momentarily forsake themselves in the experience of the fifth interval to join the gods, the fourth interval allows them to be in the sacred realm without forgetting their existence. With the fourth interval experience, individuals navigate a not-so-distant world, positioned precisely at the border of their humanity—maintaining their essence while observing it from the other side.

Humans more deeply understood the spiritual significance of the perfect fifth interval in the past compared to modern times. Around four to five centuries before our era, people had a profound connection to the fifth interval and felt a strong spiritual presence when experiencing it. They were able to evoke this interval without the use of instruments due to their heightened imaginative consciousness. This connection has diminished over time, resulting in a loss of the profound spiritual experience associated with the fifth interval. They perceived their self-produced fifth interval as traversing the divine realm. Imagination persisted within the musical element. A certain objectivity, a musical objectivity, characterized the fifth interval. However, this objective experience diminished sooner than the objective encounter with the fourth interval. The experience of the fourth interval, which occurred much later, conveyed a sense of individuals coexisting and intertwining with something ethereal.
