IN PURSUIT OF PURITY: HONORING THE INTEGRITY OF CHOPIN'S 2ND PIANO CONCERTO

Writer's picture: WalterWalter

It is with a mixture of incredulity and dismay that I observe the recent trend of pianists, in a display of misguided self-importance, inserting unsolicited notes, passages and even complete not needed, unnecessary cadenzas into f.e. Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2. Such pretentious behaviour not only undermines the integrity of a work revered for its exquisite balance and emotional profundity but also reveals an alarming disregard for the composer's original intent.

To presume that one can enhance or embellish a masterpiece already resplendent in its artistry speaks to a profound misunderstanding of musical expression. In its unadulterated form, Chopin's concerto embodies a delicate dialogue between the piano and the orchestra, a conversation rich in nuance and subtleties that require no extraneous adornment. The audacity to interject an arbitrary cadenza, then, not only disrupts this sacred exchange but also diminishes the listener's experience, reducing a moment of profound artistry to mere spectacle.

In striving for personal acclaim, one risks overshadowing the very essence of the music—a crime of egregious proportions in the realm of performance. It is essential to remember that the true artist seeks not to draw attention to themselves but to illuminate the work in all its glory, allowing the audience to engage with the beauty within the notes. Therefore, the insertion of such frivolities is not merely unwarranted but an affront to the legacy of Chopin and those who have honoured his music with authentic interpretations. One would do well to embrace humility and recognize that the mastery of great works lies not in embellishment but fidelity to their original splendour.

To those who would dare to alter the score, let it be known: true artistry does not lie in the embellishment of the past but in the faithful rendering of its beauty. The essence of great music resides in its purity, which can be tarnished only by the arrogance of those who fail to grasp this fundamental truth. Chopin’s masterpiece stands complete, unassailable in its perfection. May we honour it by allowing its voice to resonate unfettered, lest we reduce our beloved art form to mere vanity and, in so doing, lose the very magic that has captivated hearts for generations. Ultimately, the music itself must shine, free from the shadows of pretension, illuminating the path for all who seek to understand its profound depths.

I completely agree. Adding cadenzas to Chopin's Concerto undermines its beauty. True artistry respects the original score. See you next week Sensei.🙏❤
